Scope and Contents
Basic Training at Fort Ord, California, and additional mountain training at Camp Hale, Colorado. Served with the 10th Mountain Division. Aleutian Islands. Saw action in Italy, where he witnessed the body of Mussolini. Remembers some Italian words. Also served in Norway and Sweden. Regrets not bringing coral home after the war. Believes his upbringing helped him survive. Importance of C-rations. Married after the war. Discusses enjoying farming, planting chile and corn. Discusses the importance of maintaining the traditional language. Recounts the story of a Navajo soldier going AWOL to observe the German frontlines. Recounts a story of escorting POWS and the quick temper of white people. Briefly discusses life before the war: rarely going to town, riding horses, farming.
