Scope and Content

From the Collection: Photographs, photomechanical prints, posters, and postcards related to the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. The materials were collected by David Gordon who participated in the war as a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. The majority of the photos show images of the military experience of the international brigades depicting various important places of battle and headquarters; military personnel; military life; camp life; and war damage.

The posters and postcards depict a number of the same themes and have various artists, including Jose Bardasano and Jose Renau in common. The posters and postcards address issues such as: Propaganda of the P. S. U and U. G. T.; Support of the Popular Front and the Republican Army; Health and Hygiene; Literacy and Culture; Role of the International Brigades and international support of the Republican forces; and various important events and battles in the unfolding of the Spanish Civil War.

The posters are organized into the following categories based upon subject headings derived from the Biblioteca Nacional catalog: Pro-Republican; Anti-fascist; Commemorative; Culture and Literacy; Health; International Brigades; Pro-popular Army/Recruitment; Posters of Regional Issues and Unity; Tourist posters; Nationalist posters; Madrid; Mexico; Revolutionary and Political; and Youth Organizations. The postcards are organized into eighteen categories, many similar to the posters, but also includs themes such as Children's Art; Identified persons of the Spanish Republic; the Red Cross; and scenes of France and Spain.
