K. Gallegos, Nambe School - Grades 5 & 6,, 1937-1938

 Item — Box: 14, Diary: 3

Scope and Contents

This diary contains an excellent commentary on the community of Nambe. It opens with a detailed description of the teacher's first impression of the Nambe community. In her opening remarks, she discusses housing, facilities, stores in the area, food available for purchase, families and assorted other first impressions. There is also some commentary on the duties a new teacher must complete. The diary then develops to discuss the students academic and 'mental' ability. There is also mention of community voting and comments about "El Patron," fiestas and food, parents' response to report cards, "Mexicans' particular sense of humor." The children are also being taught about "value," commerce and trade, no doubt as part of the development projects being undertaken in the area by other groups such as the Boy Scouts. Throughout, there is commentary by Dr. Tireman.
