Mrs. Foote - Nambe Nursery School,, 1938-1939

 Item — Box: 3, Diary: 2

Scope and Contents

This diary is the only from a pre-school class, sometimes called nursery school. The diary is for the entire year, not just the academic year. Attendance seems to be an issue -- the teacher states that there was only room for 30 children, but approximately 39 were enrolled, ranging in age from two to five, and more were on a waiting-list to enter. By the middle of the year the average attendance was twenty. All children were Spanish speakers and were being taught basic English and using phrases such as "my school" and "my goodness". The teacher notes that many of the children have colds- later, children were given shots for diphtheria. There is some mention of "WPA" workers arriving from Washington to observe the nursery. There are comments from an unknown reader throughout.
