Scope and Contents

Born May 10, 1887 in Dallas Co., Texas near Garland. Family came to Texas from Tennessee in 1873. Moved to Collin Co., then Rockwall Co. and farmed. His father sold the farm when he was 12 years old and drove 175 longhorns to Haskell Co. Rode broncs for $30.00 a month. When he was 22 years old married Lizzie Byrd. Tried freighting and lost money; then began trading in cedar posts, hauling them from the cap rock country.
