Photographic prints, Lacandon Maya, Mayan Ruins, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, 1959

 Series — Box: 1

Scope and Contents

Photographs include images of the Lacandon Maya after a devastating bout of yellow fever ravaged the population in 1943, and deforestation threatened their homes. Photographs show everyday life of the Lacandon: cooking, cleaning, weaving, making art, attending markets, etc, as well as portraits of people. Photographs are divided by envelopes bearing Winifred Pitkin's name and hand written descriptions of each section. Two of the photographs have notes addressed to Dr. E. Winifred Pitkin on the back from Pancho, who can be seen in photographs in the albums, as well as Claire Claus (?).
