  11. Gihon and Rixon [John L. Gihon (1839-18780], Philadelphia, PA: Vignetted head of Black man with small beard, ca 1863-63. Front imprint identifies subject as “Robert Small [sic], Pilot of the Steamer Planter, Charleston, SC” and states that image is under 1862 copyright in Pennsylvania by McAllister and Brother, Philadelphia [a long-standing dealership in optical and scientific instruments.] Small back imprint; this studio partnership is recorded only in 1862-63. [Research show the subject to be Robert Smalls (1839-1915), who was a slave assigned to pilot duty on the steamboat Planter in Charleston harbor. In April 1862, he and other Black crewmen brought his family aboard in absence of the captain and made away with the boat, taking it past various sentries and Fort Sumter, and turned it and its artillery cargo over to the Union forces. He was awarded a large sum by President Lincoln and made a pilot, and later Captain, in the U.S. Navy and assigned back to Charleston. This picture reflects his celebrity at the time, but his later career is more important in terms of Black history, including his participation in two South Carolina constitutional conventions, service in both houses of the state legislature, service in four congresses of the United States, service in the state militia to the ultimate rank of major-general, and appointment as port collector of Beaufort, S.C.
