Scope and Content
The collection consists of carte de visite photographs dating from the 1860s to the 1920s.
The collection consists entirely of original prints. Images measure approximately 2.5 x 4 inches (or the inverse). Most are albumen prints mounted on cards bearing imprints of the photographers either on the front margin or on the back. Hand-colored prints, collodion prints, gem miniatures, and enameled prints in CdV size are also represented. Primary subjects are portraits of individuals and groups, landscapes, and cityscapes.
General Photo Archives acquisitions and purchases dating from Rudisill’s tenure as curator round out the collection. CDVs from other collections are currently interfiled and may be removed at a later date into the appropriate collection record or into PAPF 004 (Carte de Visites).

History
The majority of the collection was assembled by prominent photo historian and scholar Richard Rudisill (d. 2011) during the 1970s thorough 1990s as part of his research on the history of photography. Rudisill was Professor of Art History at the University of New Mexico and served as the photographic historian at the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives for 30 years.

3.5 linear feet, 4 boxes, over 1000 photographs (The collection consists of approximately 1.5 linear feet of European images, 1 linear foot of United States and Canadian images, and 1 linear foot of images in the following subject groups: New Mexico, Latin America, Africa, Asia, U.S. Civil War, and Native American subjects. )
