Scope and Content

From the Collection: The Norman Cleaveland Papers comprise three linear feet and span the years 1876-1984. The majority of the materials relate to Cleaveland's writing and his mining careers. There are mining related photographs and four oral history tapes containing interviews and speeches. The papers are arranged into four series: Personal, Writings, Mining, and Oral History Tapes.

The Personal series spans the years 1876-1993. The materials are both original documents and photocopies from other institutions. The majority of these documents relate to Cleaveland's family members. Additionally, there is both outgoing and incoming correspondence.

The Writings series contains primarily writings by Cleaveland concerning his theories about the Santa Fe Ring and its role in his grandfather's, William Raymond Morley, death. Most of these writings are short, unpublished works of only a few pages. There are page proofs for Cleaveland's book about his grandparents, The Morleys-Young Upstarts on the Southwest Frontier. This series also contains Cleaveland's full length book on mining in Malaya, Bang! Bang! In Ampang.

The Mining Series spans the years 1910-1988 and contains primarily materials related to the Pacific Tin Consolidated Corporation. There are chronological files kept by Cleaveland from 1965-1985 and copies of the annual reports from 1966-1983. Related materials include correspondence with Stu Miller who followed Cleaveland as the president of the Pacific Tin for many years. There also are files which contain information related to Newton Cleaveland and the Santa Fe Dredging Company. Additionally, this series contains mining publications and diagrams.
