Scope and Content

The Norman Cleaveland Papers comprise three linear feet and span the years 1876-1984. The majority of the materials relate to Cleaveland's writing and his mining careers. There are mining related photographs and four oral history tapes containing interviews and speeches. The papers are arranged into four series: Personal, Writings, Mining, and Oral History Tapes.

The Personal series spans the years 1876-1993. The materials are both original documents and photocopies from other institutions. The majority of these documents relate to Cleaveland's family members. Additionally, there is both outgoing and incoming correspondence.

The Writings series contains primarily writings by Cleaveland concerning his theories about the Santa Fe Ring and its role in his grandfather's, William Raymond Morley, death. Most of these writings are short, unpublished works of only a few pages. There are page proofs for Cleaveland's book about his grandparents, The Morleys-Young Upstarts on the Southwest Frontier. This series also contains Cleaveland's full length book on mining in Malaya, Bang! Bang! In Ampang.

The Mining Series spans the years 1910-1988 and contains primarily materials related to the Pacific Tin Consolidated Corporation. There are chronological files kept by Cleaveland from 1965-1985 and copies of the annual reports from 1966-1983. Related materials include correspondence with Stu Miller who followed Cleaveland as the president of the Pacific Tin for many years. There also are files which contain information related to Newton Cleaveland and the Santa Fe Dredging Company. Additionally, this series contains mining publications and diagrams.

Biographical Sketch

Norman Cleaveland was born in 1901 to Agnes Morley and Newton Cleaveland. He graduated as an engineer from Stanford University. One of Cleaveland's early accomplishments was winning a Gold Medal in the 1924 Paris Olympics as a member of the American rugby team over the heavily favored French team. Cleaveland served in World War II as a service pilot for the Army Air Forces.

Cleaveland's first dredging job was near Nome, Alaska, in 1922. In 1930, he took a dredging job in the Far East working primarily in Malaya. From 1946 until his retirement in 1966, Cleaveland lived in Malaya where he was president of the New York based company, Pacific Tin Consolidated Corporation. He wrote the book Bang! Bang! In Ampang, about dredging tin during Communist insurrection in Malaya.

Taking up writing about his family history in later years, Cleaveland published the book The Morleys-Young Upstarts on the Southwest Frontier in 1971. He felt that his family was a victim of the Santa Fe Ring and produced many writings, both published and unpublished, on his theories and beliefs.

Cleaveland and his wife Ann had three daughters: Helen, Alice, and Sarah.

Norman Cleaveland died June 8, 1997 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
