Scope and Content
From the Collection:
The Calbert C. Morlan Letters span the years 1943-1946. The bulk of the letters are dated 1944-1945, and are addressed to Morlan's mother Rosie Morlan. Additional letters are addressed to Morlan's siblings, Opal and Earl, and his father Ernie.
The letters were sent to Albuquerque from England, France, Germany, and Fort Bliss, Texas, where Morlan was stationed. There is limited mention of daily army life in Morlan's letters. In one letter he lists places in France he passed through after sailing from England. He also records hospital stays and some observations of France.
The overall tone of the letters changes drastically midway through 1944. After this time many of the letters contain embittered and at some times violent language towards himself and his family members.
The 1946 letters from Fort Bliss contain none of the harsh language, and Morlan comments that he is planning on reenlisting in the army for another two years.
