Militia Payment Issue, These records concern the redemption of militia warrants and certificates of allowance issued as a result of the 1867 Militia Act. (See General Accounts, Certificates of Allowance Record Books). The majority of the warrants were held by Santa Fe merchant Abraham Staab., 1903-1907.

Scope and Contents From the Series: The military forces of the Territory were known as the Territorial Militia until 1897, when the Legislative Assembly provided for the organization of The National Guard of New Mexico. Prior to 1897, the Militia was not a permanent organization, but was subject to call by the Governor in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief during periods of Indian uprisings, civil disturbances or depredations by outlaws.
