Register of Militia Regimental Organizations Prior to 1866. This record book was apparently compiled by Adjutant General George W. Knaebel in 1895-1896 from muster rolls, discharges and other militia records recovered from private parties and from official U.S. Army sources. See Return of Muster Rolls Issue., 1861-1867.

Scope and Contents From the Series: The military forces of the Territory were known as the Territorial Militia until 1897, when the Legislative Assembly provided for the organization of The National Guard of New Mexico. Prior to 1897, the Militia was not a permanent organization, but was subject to call by the Governor in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief during periods of Indian uprisings, civil disturbances or depredations by outlaws.
