Scope and Content
The collection consists of the Territorial and New Mexico District Court records for Torrance County, New Mexico (1904-1942). The bulk of the material covers the years 1905-1916. Included are record books (1905-1941) and case files (1904-1942). Record books consist of various dockets (1905-1941) and court proceedings record books (1905-1911). Dockets include criminal (1906-1911), civil (1905-1911), and judge's civil and criminal (1907-1923, 1936-1941) volumes. Case files include criminal cases 1-379 (1904-1916) and civil cases 1-3146 (1905-1942). Large gaps may exist between case files. Most cases after 1912 are not part of this collection.

Historical Note
Torrance County, New Mexico was established in 1903 and formed part of the 2nd Judicial District of the United States Territorial Court in New Mexico. In subsequent years, Torrance County was transferred from the 2nd to the 6th Judicial District (1904), from the 6th to the 1st Judicial District (1909), from the 1st to the 3rd Judicial District (1912), and from the 3rd to the 7th Judicial District (1941). Upon statehood in 1912, the Territorial Courts became the New Mexico District Courts.

Naturalization records are located in the "Naturalization Records by New Mexico Court" (Accession Number 1959-281).
Additional court material is located in the "Records of the United States Territorial and New Mexico District Court Clerk" (Accession Number 1974-033).
Most statehood material remains with the Judicial District Court Clerk.
