Scope and Content

From the Collection: The university has offered some form of off-campus offerings since the early decades of the twentieth century. In general, these offerings have followed national trends in this form of education. Administrative organization has varied. The following list is only an indication of the types of organization there have been. From entries in the University Bulletin it would appear that no off-campus instruction other than at organized centers was offered throughout the 1980s.

1913 – the University Bulletin merely says the university offers correspondence courses

1916 – there is an “Extension Department”

1924 – there is a “Correspondence and Extension Department”

1932 – there is a “Department of Extension”

1942 – “Extension and Correspondence Courses” are listed

1953 – the University Bulletin says “correspondence courses are offered by various departments”

1962 – there is a “Director of Extension and Field Service”

1973 – there is an “Extension Division”

1991 – the university established an “Off-Campus Instruction Office”

1996 – a “Distance Learning Center” was established

1998 – the Office of Educational Outreach Services was established
