Matachines (Dance)

Abstract The Deidre Sklar papers document the research of a dance ethnologist, focusing on the cultural, religious and dance traditions of the town of Tortugas, New Mexico. The collection includes extensive background research, original writings, observation notes, analysis, interview notes, images, audiovisual material, maps and correspondence. The materials document the annual fiesta held at Tortugas in honor of the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, December 12.

Abstract The collection features sound recordings and background information on Juan B. Rael, interviews and photos from the 1995 Farmers’ Markets Project in Colorado Springs, and folk music recordings (corridos, inditas, alabados and other traditional songs) and photographs with Native Americans and Hispanics of New Mexico, Cajuns in Texas, and Mexicans on the U.S. Mexican border. Abstract The Luke Lyon papers contain extensive research materials collected and created by Mr. Lyon on the subject of Native American dance ceremonies and rituals in New Mexico and the Southwest. There also is material on folk dance of England. The collection includes background research files, Mr. Lyon's field notes and analysis from attendance at dances and ceremonies, published and unpublished writing, original drawings, audiovisual materials, maps and photographs.

Abstract This collection consists of 278 sound recordings made in 1950 and 1965. It contains social songs, dances, violin and vocal presentations, oral history interviews and commentaries about Native American customs, social life, ceremonies and rituals.

Scope and Contents Series I: Los Matachines de Alcalde contains photographs of the Matachines dances in northern New Mexico, a tradition shared by Pueblo and Hispano communities. Hall took this series of photographs in Alcalde in the 1980s. Some of the photos in this set were done for a New Mexico Magazine piece in 1986.
