Abstract The journal/diary describes a U.S. surveying expedition to the Pacific Ocean, with entries recording observations about the seas, weather, marine life, birds, vegetation, natives, living conditions, etc., 1872-1875. Loose pages of another travel diary record Bayer's observations on a trip via steamer, leaving from NYC on September 5, 1879 and arriving in ParĂ¡, Brazil on Sept. 18, 1879.
