Biographical / Historical
Alternatively called The Albuquerque Sun, The Daily Sun and The Evening Sun.
The Sun’s first issue was published on 18 May 1908. As quoted from the Santa Fe New Mexican, 7 May 1908, “Laura Biggar Bennett, the former actress and widow of Henry N. Bennett, the Pittsburg theatrical manager, is now editor of the Daily Sun…” In actuality, Mrs. Bennett was the owner, and the editor was a C.C. Hendricks.
The Sun started printing when there were already two dailies in Albuquerque; The Albuquerque Morning Journal and The Albuquerque Citizen.
It has been stated by William Keleher in his memoirs that The Sun used muckraking as a way of increasing circulation. In early June of 1908, Editor Hendricks editorials began attacking the Albuquerque Police Department. Officer William Phillips took offense to these editorials. Officer Phillips confronted Editor Hendricks in the office of The Sun. Editor Hendricks then beat Officer Phillips so severely that he needed to be treated by a physician. The Albuquerque Morning Journal published a very detailed account of the whole incident.
The mayor requested Officer Phillips resign from the police department, which he did. In August 1908, former Officer Phillips filed suit against Sun Publishing Company, Mrs. Bennett, C.C. Hendricks, and the Journal Publishing Company. He was suing for $25,000 in damages for libel. His case was not successful.
The Sun folded as a publication in the fall of 1908. {UNM’s coverage ends on 3 Oct 1908}
