Scope and Contents
This collection contains mostly published materials collected by educator Carol Thompson and donated by her friend, Gail Greenberg. These materials give a general overview of resources used at Indian schools in the 1960s-1980s, of student life during that period, and an overview of the schools. The materials have been separated into seven subject areas.
Subject descriptions:
I. Curricula and Teachers’ Manuals. A collection of booklets concerned with the teaching of various subjects in Fort Wingate schools,including Navajo History.
II. Navajo Social Studies Project. Primarily items published by the University of New Mexico in conjunction with the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, these items pertain to Navajo life and folklore.
III. Navajo Language, History, and Culture. The publications in this series explore different facets of Navajo culture, including individual biographies, Navajo traditions, language learning, tribal government, and crafts.
IV. Recruitment Marketing Materials. A binder compiled of pictures, pamphlets, and maps that show what life as an Indian school educator might entail.
V. Periodicals. A combination of scholarly journals and student magazines.
VI. Literary Anthologies. Collections of creative writing by Fort Wingate High School students, 1968-1974.
VII. Other Tribal Materials. Small books and pamphlets with information about Cochiti Indians, Hopi Indians, trading posts, the Historical Society of North Dakota, principal Indian Chiefs, and other subjects not directly related to the Navajo.
