Ethnic Newspapers of the West by Jake Gehring; Session part of 1998 National Genealogical Society Conference in the States; Ethnic groups in America- because current US population is almost entirely tied to immigrant groups in the past several centuries, there are many ethnic newspapers to be found to really help track down family lines. Gehring talks about what you are able to find in ethnic newspapers in the Western United States, how the internet newspaper programs can help. 1732 German newspaper seems to be first ethnic press in the United States- the growth of ethnic newspapers corresponds pretty well to the growth of US immigration. Ethnic press for many is the defining publication for an ethnic community- social life, opinions, politics, business all reflected really well in the ethnic newspapers of a given community. Ethnic newspapers can take the form of faternal organizations, trade jounral, cultural sheet describing ethnic activites, and other forms. Natralizations records, ships passenger lists, censuses, family knowledge of history, etc- all can help deterime ethnicity and from there you can locate ethnic newspapers more easily that relate to your family history.
