New Mexico Land Grants by Gilberto Espinosa ; Intro re: membership, beginnings of Albuquerque Historical Society, Old Town- 1947-1953 New organization. Gilberto Espinosa- Historian, author, translator, in Albuquerque Historical Society Board of Directors. Spanish land grants- 1598-1823 the Spanish King granted land, Mexican land grants. The "ownership" then to the Mexican government . Earlier, land grants were given to "favorites" or as a reward- not necessarily to home owners. Encomienda system- all feudal system. Near Indian pueblos so those populations could work for the Spanish settler. Private land grants, original Alameda land grant, community/town land grants. Community Land Grants: a group would file a petition w the Alcalde (like the Justice of Peace)- King delegates his authority to the Viceroy, then the governor, then to the Alcalde, and land belonged to the Crown.
