Biographical / Historical
Biographical/Historical:
The Chaco Additions survey was conducted in 1983 and 1984 under the direction of Robert P. Powers. The primary objective of the survey was to carry out a 100% inventory of previously unsurveyed areas added to Chaco Culture National Historical Park in 1980. A total of 6,288 acres, including all of the Kin Klizhin, Kin Bineola, and Chacra Mesa parcels, and a portion of the South Addition were surveyed. A total of 957 sites and 183 isolated occurrences were recorded. The project had both cultural resource management and research objectives. Cultural resource management objectives focused on: 1) accurate identification and location of all sites; and recovery of basic classificatory and descriptive data, including cultural affiliation, temporal placement, site function, description of site features, description of material culture, and environmental setting. Sites were also evaluated with respect to condition, the need for preservation and protection, and National Register eligibility. Research objectives included: 1) description of the archeological remains; use of surface artifacts to identify differences in the function of archeological sites; and, 3) examination of the Canyon and its periphery as a single settlement system. Adhering to a "no-collection" policy relatively few surface artifacts were collected. Some sherds and lithics were collected to supplement existing Chaco Center type collections, and a few museum quality items, including a burden basket, digging sticks, and other items were curated.
