HISTORY:
Theodore (Ted) Sowers was a seasonal ranger/historian at Chaco Canyon National Monument in 1941, custodian
(superintendent) of Chaco Canyon National Monument from 1945-1946, and custodian of Great Sand Dunes National Monument
from 1946-1950.
During the 1941 season, Sowers produced several photographic reports of the archaeological
sites, including petrogylph panels and the effect of the fall of Threatening Rock in January 1941.
The photographs in this collection are primarily from this year.
He published an article in "Southwestern Lore," Vol. 8 No. 2, September 1942, entitled "The
Petroglyphs of the Chaco Canyon area."
After working for the Wyoming Archaeological Survey in Laramie (1941-1945?), he arrived
back in Chaco as custodian on January 4, 1945. His tenure lasted through November 12, 1946,
when he and his wife Cecilia left for his new posting at Great Sand Dune National Monument. The journals in
this collection document his daily work at Chaco. Sowers was obviously accustomed to keeping
these National Park Serivice Field Technicians' Comment journals, because the Chaco entries are contained in
Journal #9, which begins December 1, 1944, while Sowers was at Tumacacori National Monument, and ends in
Journal #16, March 31, 1947, while Sowers was working at Great Sand Dune National Monument.
