Biographical/Historical:
In the summer of 1995, a reunion was organized and held in Chaco Canyon for those who participated in the ASNM rock-art field schools. After re-visiting sites at the reunion, Jane Kolber realized that the school's methods had not been sufficient to adequately record all the data and proposed that the NPS records be appended. The restudy was approved and recording sessions began in 1996. The Chaco Navajo Rock Art Project (CNRAP) was funded by a grant from the Western National Parks Association and also involved Jane Kolber. Because Navajo art is rarely located in close proximity to the ruins, much of it was overlooked by the ASNM Rock-Art Field School. Navajo rock-art also had not been studied since it was relatively recent and most studies had been focused on the prehistoric. In April-May 2006, Jane Kolber, Donna Yoder and Thomas Windes led the Chaco Area Inventory of Resources on Navajo lands (CAIRN) outside the boundaries of the CC NHP to document evidence of prior occupation that had been previously neglected. This survey was conducted under the auspices of the Navajo Nation Chaco Protection Sites Program. In this project both the traditional archeology and the rock art was recorded simultaneously, a rare example of a site being studied at the same time instead of fractionally over a long period of time. Kolber and Yoder recorded all the rock-art while Windes and his team determined the limits of each site, assigned site field numbers, and mapped and recorded each site.
