Identifier: Coll 0033
Scope and Contents
Manuscripts, film negatives, photocards,
photographs
The manuscripts are mostly notes from classes which he took during the Field School on the Zuni language, paleontology, ceramics, geology, Pueblo ethnology and copies of student papers he wrote. There are also copies of several journals -- DIGS (C52487), El Palacio (C52488), and a UNM Bulletin for the Field School session (C52489); newspaper clippings; and a copy of the 1924 Albuquerque Auto Show catalog (C52490).
The collection includes original photographs from Vann's days at the UNM Chaco Field School. They depict the Chetro Ketl excavations, Pueblo Bonito and Threatening Rock, rock art and historic inscriptions, classmates and co-workers, the field school camp, Casa Rinconada, masonry, a Navajo rodeo, and Chaco Wash flooding. There are negatives for some of these photographs which were made by the Chaco Project. Two nitrate negatives were reformatted into safety negatives and interpositives.
There are 15 negatives, 31662-31672, 31678-31687 (CHCU 52332) and 41 photographic prints on photo cards, 24798-24838 (CHCU 52486). Some of the photographs on the photocards are originals and others were printed by the Chaco Project.

Biographical / Historical
The Richard Pickard Vann Collection contains original documents from the time he spent at the University of New Mexico Chaco Field School from 1929-1931. He became an optometrist in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and died in the 1980's. His widow, Mrs. Kathleen Vann, donated this collection.
Other original copies of his student papers and some photographs are present in the Vivian Archive (see VA 1884J, VA 1885J, VA 1907B, VA 2179D, and VA 2183K). These are not a part of this collection since some were included in papers acquired from Paul Reiter or his family. However, some were from Richard Vann but since they were previously added to the Vivian Archive, they have been cataloged as part of the Vivian Archive.
National Park Service photocards exist for the photographs included in this collection.
