Biographical / Historical

Sophie Bledsoe Herrick Aberle (1896 July 21 [?] - 1996 October 1) was an anthropologist, scientist, author, and physician. She lived in New Mexico during the mid to late twentieth century. She was noted for her work with the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico.

Born in New York, Aberle graduated with a BA, MA, and PhD from Stanford University during the 1920s and a MD from Yale University in 1930. She worked at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the National Research Council, and the University of New Mexico. Aberle later worked as the chief nutritionist for the Bernalillo County Indian Hospital and as a professor of physchiatry at the University of New Mexico. She retired in 1970.
