Scope and Contents

This interview surveys the life and career of Dr. Robert Friedenberg (1909-1990) of Albuquerque, New Mexico. One of New Mexico's pioneer board-certified internists, Dr. Friedenberg practiced in Albuquerque from 1945 until his retirement in 1978. Among the subjects discussed in this interview are Dr. Friedenberg's personal and professional backgrounds; his service in the U.S. Army and the Veterans Administration, including the VA Hospital in Albuquerque; the development and importance of the American College of Physicians in New Mexico; the creation of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine; the medical community of Albuquerque and its medical facilities; and others.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Robert Friedenberg (1909-1990) was a longtime physician in Albuquerque, New Mexico. One of New Mexico's pioneer board-certified internists, Dr. Friedenberg practiced in Albuquerque from 1945 until his retirement in 1978. Born in New York City, Friedenberg graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1935. Following an internship and a fellowship, he served in the United States Army Medical Corp from 1942-1946. In 1944, he became board certified in internal medicine and worked at Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque from 1945-1946. During 1946, he opened a private practice in internal medicine in Albuquerque. Friedenberg served as the governor of the American College of Physicians (1953-1962) and as president of the Bernalillo County Medical Society (1955-1956).
