Scope and Contents

This interview with Dr. Thomas L. Chiffelle (1918-2008) focuses on his nearly forty years' association with Albuquerque's Lovelace Clinic. In addition to his own personal and professional background, Dr. Chiffelle comments on Albuquerque medicine and the place of the Lovelace Clinic within it. Among the subjects discussed are the doctors William Randolph Lovelace I, William Randolph Lovelace II, and the other major figures of the Lovelace institution; the friction between the Clinic and the "downtown doctors"; the internal operations of the Clinic; medical laboratories within the group practice setting; and many more.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Thomas L. Chiffelle (1918-2008) was a doctor at the Lovelace Clinic for nearly forty years. Chiffelle was born in Lewiston, Maine and studied medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. From 1945-1947, he was stationed at Bruns General Hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico as a member of the U.S. Army Medical Corps. In 1949, Chiffelle became board-certified in pathology. He joined the Lovelace Clinic in Albuquerque in 1951.
