Scope and Contents

This interview with Dr. Victor E. Berchtold (1901-2007) of Santa Fe, New Mexico, provides a broad overview of his half century in medicine, from his student days at Creighton University through forty years of practice in Santa Fe. The interview provides information about the following subjects: the Santa Fe medical community of the 1930s and 1940s; the importance of the tuberculosis industry in New Mexico; the development of Dr. Berchtold's specialty focus on urology; and St. Vincent's Sanatorium/Hospital. Discussed at lesser length are Dr. Thomas P. Martin of Taos, New Mexico; public health services in the state; the impact of the Great Depression; the development of urological surgery; Bruns General Hospital (Santa Fe); malpractice insurance; and other subjects.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Victor E. Berchtold (1901-2007) was a physician in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He specialized in urology and practiced in Santa Fe for forty years. Berchtold studied at Creighton University and moved to Santa Fe in the 1930s.
