Scope and Content

This interview with Roswell, New Mexico's Robert O. Anderson (1917-2007), internationally prominent businessman-industrialist-philanthropist, focuses on his (then) quarter-century association with the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque. He served the institution as board member and chairman of the board and was a critical figure in the center's evolution. Among the subjects discussed in this interview are the prominent personages of the institution; the major issues confronting it during the period of the 1960's into the late 1980's; the critical decisions which shaped the institution; and its relationship to other members of the community, such as the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and Presbyterian Hospital.

Biography / History

Robert Orville Anderson was born on April 13, 1917. He graduated from The University of Chicago in 1939 and became active in the oil industry. Over the years he was a petroleum executive, rancher, philanthropist, and civic leader. He was the Chief Executive Officer for seventeen years with Atlantic Richfield Company, Chairman of the Board for twenty-one years, and a Board of Directors member for twenty-three years. After retiring from Atlantic Richfield in 1986, Mr Anderson formed Hondo Oil & Gas, an independent company.

Mr. Anderson served as Chairman of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas from 1961 through 1964. He served on the Board of Directors of Chase Manhattan Bank, Columbia Broadcasting System, First National Bank of Chicago, Weyerhaeuser Company, and Carter Hawley Stores. He was the first recipient of the Charles A. Lindbergh Award for Significant Achievement in 1978 and of The Dwight D. Eisenhower Medal of Excellence in 1989. He was Honorary Chairman of Aspen Institute, founder of the International Institute for Environment and Development, London, and a Life Trustee of the California Institute of Technology and the University of Chicago.

Mr. Anderson and his wife, Barbara were married sixty-eight years and had seven children, 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Robert O. Anderson died on December 2, 2007 at his home in Roswell, New Mexico.
