Scope and Content

The collection consists of papers donated by Dr. Charles R. Beeson in 1997 which represent his main concerns and areas of interest while a physician in New Mexico. The reports, presentations, and conference materials represent his interest in and involvement with community-based medicine, cancer control, and Navajo medicine. The materials also include information on the New Mexico Health Care Corporation, Mastercare, an open panel prepaid health plan organized in the 1970s. The correspondence, letters written and received from 1974-1979, mostly with New Mexico's congressional delegation, covers many topics including the concerns of Dr. Beeson regarding the socialization of medicine and medical research and state tax legislation.

Biography or History

Charles Rische Beeson was born in Waldo, Arkansas June 6, 1923. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Arkansas. Dr. Beeson completed his internship in 1945 at the Alameda County Hospital in Oakland, California and his internal medicine residency at the University of Arkansas hospital in 1949. He continued his medical education at the Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana where he completed a cardiology fellowship. His academic career as a clinical professor of medicine took him to the University of New Mexico and UCLA. While in New Mexico, Dr. Beeson was Director of the New Mexico Cancer Control Program sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. He retired from the University of New Mexico in 1994.
