History

UNM’s Health Sciences Center (HSC) was created in 1994 to combine College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, School of Medicine, Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center, UNM Hospitals, UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center, and lastly UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center. These seven units joined together to provide education, research, patient care, and community outreach to the state of New Mexico.

College of Nursing’s mission since 1955 is “to provide nursing education, research, service, and leadership.” It now shares a building with College of Pharmacy on the north campus of UNM where there are nursing classrooms and skills laboratories for nursing students.

College of Pharmacy was opened in 1945 and has become the only school to offer a Doctor of Pharmacy in the state of New Mexico. It has increased its full time employees from 6 to 22, and has granted more than 2,316 professional pharmacy degrees. It is also known as having the most diverse student body in the nation.

UNM School of Medicine began in 1964 after President Popejoy received funding in 1961 to open the first medical school in New Mexico. The first class was taught in a converted 7-up bottling plant and mortuary. Since then, the School of Medicine has experienced growth with each new president. In 2011, the Rural Medicine program ranked second in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools.”

Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center was originally the library for Bernalillo County Medical Society in 1947. The library became part of School of Medicine in 1961 when the university received funding to begin a medical school. It has been in the same location since 1977 when a grant for $2.24 million was received for a new building by the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. In 2001, the library’s name added on Informatics Center to show its new role in informatics.

UNM Hospitals is New Mexico’s only Academic Medical Center and the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center. UNM Hospitals consist of UNM Hospital, Carrie Tingley Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Children’s Psychiatric Center, Psychiatric Center, and Cancer Center. It constantly follows its mission of “serving as an accessible, high quality, safety focused, comprehensive care provider for all the people of Bernalillo County, and providing specialized services for people across the State.”

UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center (CRTC) received funding in 1971 from the New Mexico State Legislature and National Cancer Institute. Their mission of providing world-class care to cancer patients in New Mexico has lasted for over 40 years. The faculty consists of 85 board-certified oncologists and 126 cancer scientists. Recently, there have been groundbreaking discoveries in women’s cancer as well as childhood leukemia.

UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center is the newest edition to the Health Sciences Center. It is located in Rio Rancho and is served by UNM Faculty Physicians in Radiology, Pathology, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry and Hospitalists. The mission is to improve the overall health of the community it serves in Sandoval County while working closely with UNM School of Medicine, UNM College of Nursing, UNM College of Pharmacy, and Central New Mexico Community College.
