Civil War Manuscript - Handwritten draft of an account of Confederate attempt to capture the Territory of New Mexico during the Civil War, written by Colonel Charles Porter. This unsigned document (16 folio pages) is substantially different from the 1964 published version Charles Porter’s Account of the Confederate Attempt to Seize Arizona and New Mexico, edited by Alwyn Barr and published by The Pemberton Press, Austin, Texas. Both versions use degrading and racist language (some left out in the printed version) in discussing Native Spanish/Mexican and Native American Indian persons and cultures. The documents have penciled-in editorial marks and notes, some of which are reflected in the text of the published version., circa 1880
