Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials pertaining to Virginia Hyde, her research and writings about D. H. Lawrence, and her work on the nomination of the D. H. Lawrence Ranch to the National Register of Historic Places. The collection contains photographs, typescripts, holographic manuscripts, published articles, correspondence, and other materials. The collection came to the Center for Southwest via the Hyde Estate and David Barnes.

Biographical Information

Virginia Hyde was born in Atchison, Kansas on October 5, 1938. She attended high school in Arizona. Her first marraige to Jack Hyde only lasted a few years. In 1987, she married David Barnes.

Hyde received her bachelor's degree in German from Arizona State University and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Wisconsin. Hyde accepted a position at Washington State University as an assistant professor in 1970, where she taught in the English Department for 34 years.

Virginia Hyde was known as one of the prominent D. H. Lawrence scholars. She authored The Risen Adam: D. H. Lawrence’s Revisionist Typology (Penn State UP) and edited the Cambridge critical edition of Lawrence’s Mornings in Mexico and Other Essays (Cambridge UP, 2009). In total, she authored or edited six books, guest-edited literary journals, and published dozens of essays in journals and books, including the MLA “Teaching Authors” series.

Dr. Hyde died on January 2, 2019.
