Background Information

The Dr. J. I. Dunham Memorial Association was formed in 1970, in Chama, NM. The Association's mission was:
  • to promote, own, and manage the Dunham Memorial Medical Clinic for the public welfare and health of the general public.
  • to buy, sell, an deal in commodities and products or supplies that it deemed expedient to handle
  • to act as agent/broker for its members
  • to buy, lease and/or acquire, hold, and control real and personal property necessary, convenient, or proper in the conduct of its business, and to enter into contracts or other business negotiations necessary in the conduct of its business.
  • to erect, construct, or acquire any interest in and operate any buildings, warehouses, facilities or machinery or equipment necessary and/or incident to its business

The Clinic initially operated out of 6 rooms in the Shamrock Hotel in Chama. Citizens of Chama, Tierra Amarilla, Parkview, Ensenado, Brazos, Cebolla, Canjilon, Monero, and Lumberton contributed funds to purchase equipment; operations were underwritten by the Española Hospital. A "permanent" location for the clinic was eventually secured, but by the mid-1990s, the Clinic was deeply in debt and was forced to sell most of its assets. It reopened in 1996, operated by Health Centers of Northern New Mexico.
