Biographical Information
Jeanne Whitehouse Peterson was born on May 8, 1939 in Walla Walla, Washington. She earned her B.A. from Washington State University (1961), her M.A. from Columbia University (1965), and her PhD from the University of New Mexico (1987). Her dissertation is titled, "The Early Life of Ann Nolan Clark: A Contextual Biography."
Jeanne Whitehouse Peterson's career included teaching, serving in the U.S. Peace Corps, educational director for teacher's aides in career opportunity, part-time lecturer in children's literature. She wrote stories and poems for young people that focused on family, community, language, and culture. Her books include My Mama Sings; Sometimes I Dream Horses; I Have a Sister -- My Sister is Deaf; Don't Forget Winona; That is That; While the Moon Shines Bright.
