Biographical / Historical
Father Elmer James Niemeyer established La Parroquia de La Santísima Trinidad in Arroyo Seco, New Mexico as a full parish in 1946. From then until 1952, Father Neimeyer served as parish priest for the five Sangre de Cristo mountain communities of Arroyo Seco, Arroyo Hondo, Valdez, San Cristobal and Las Colonias that constitute the parish. During this period, Father Niemeyer helped initiate the “Veterans School for Carpenters”, in which local veterans made furniture in the Spanish Colonial style. Using his own camera and film, Father Niemeyer documented the work of these craftsmen along with various church and community events. Later while a priest at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico, Father Niemeyer gave the films to educator, writer, church deacon and Arroyo Seco native, Larry Torres, in 1983. Larry Torres donated Father Niemeyer’s films to the Center for Southwest Research in 2023. Father Elmer Niemeyer died in Roswell in 1997.
