Biographical / Historical
The Physics and Astronomy Department at the University of New Mexico was established in 1892, and has since then gained a reputation for world-class research in a variety of fields, including astrophysics and astronomy, optics and photonics, atomic and subatomic physics, biomedical physics, geophysics, cosmology, and statistical physics. Over the years, the department has experienced growth and change, with new building and facilities acquisitions such as the high altitude observatory on Capilla Peak in the Manzano Mountains, completed in 1950-1951, and a 10,000 square feet physics building in 1952. In 1962-63, the department took over astronomy from the Department of Mathematics and became the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The department's close proximity to Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Sandia National Laboratories, and Kirtland Air Force Base has been a significant factor in its development. In 1985, the Institute for Astrophysics was established as a result of the growth of research in astrophysics. Today, the Physics and Astronomy Department at UNM continues to be a leading center for research and study in the field.
