Scope and Contents

The Sherman A. Wengerd Papers consist of petroleum geology reports and articles by Sherman A. Wengerd; UNM geology department classroom files and labratory manuals; records relating to military service in the navy. It also includes numerous certifications of achievement, photographs, personal correspondences and travel intineraries. Most of the material is from the 1960s to the 1980s, when Sherman Wengred was active at the university. The collection is grouped by the following: university material including lectures, exams, manuals, memos and correspondences, and awards and certifications; geological surveys, bulletins, articles, and reports; miscellaneous materials from personal life (letters, travel itineraries) ; photographs of colleagues and geological sites.

Biographical / Historical

Sherman A. Wengerd was born on February, 17 1915, in Berlin, Ohio of German-Swiss Mennonite ancestry, and he died January 25, 1995. He was a geology professor at the University of New Mexico from 1947 to 1976, but returned in 1982 as a distinguished professor of petroleum geology. His courses introduced sedimentology, photogeology, petroleum geology, stratigraphie analysis, and hydrogeology into the curriculum, and trained and inspired generations of students for careers in the petroleum industry, academia, and government service. Sherman Wengerd's publications list includes more than 140 titles, covering such diverse topics as petroleum geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, photogrammetry, geomorphology, and timely issues in the geologic profession. He also contributed more than 250 articles to regional guidebooks, national bulletins, American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and American Institute of Petroleum Geologists (AIPG) newsletters, memorials, and chapters in reference books and encyclopedias.The bulk of his work was done in the Four Corners area of the Southwest United States and he was a founder of the Four Comers Geological Society. Wengerd was active in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, serving as national editor from 1957-1958 and president from 1971-1972, and was a charter member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists, serving as state section president in 1970.
