Background Information
Kay Matthews is a freelance journalist, publisher, and editor of La Jicarita, a journal of environmental politics. She and her partner, Mark Schiller, started La Jicarita in 1996 as the print newspaper of Rio Pueblo/Rio Embudo Watershed Protection Coalition, a watchdog group. The paper soon expanded to investigate environmental and social justice issues across northern New Mexico: loss of agricultural lands to development; transfer of water out of agricultural use; loss of grasslands to forest encroachment; loss of biodiversity due to fire suppression; lack of community access to forest resources; and the continuing decline in community stability due to lack of economic opportunity and attendant social problems. The paper is now published online. Matthews lives on a farm in El Valle, NM where she served as an acequia commissioner for many years.
