Scope and Contents

The Mabel Dodge Luhan House and the cultural milieu encompassing it (1920s-1990’s) are the prime focuses of the collection. Mabel Dodge Luhan, Tony Luhan, family, and friends who visited them are depicted in the collection. Dennis Hopper, who bought the Mabel Dodge Luhan House in 1970, and the “hippie” years are also documented via the photographs. Many of the photos were used to illustrate Rudnick’s publication, Utopian Vistas: The Mabel Dodge Luhan House and the American Counterculture. The collection contains photographs by Lisa Law, Bob Campagna, Ron Cooper, Ernest Knee, Douglas Magnus, and “Finley.” Most photographs are reproductions.

Biographical Information

Dr. Lois Palken Rudnick researched and wrote about northern New Mexico for almost all of her adult life. She chaired the American Studies Department at the University of Massachusetts, Boston for 26 years, before retiring in 2009 and moving to Santa Fe. Rudnick taught, published, and lectured widely throughout the US and internationally on modern American culture, history, and literature, most especially on the writer and artist communities of Santa Fe and Taos. She is probably best known for her numerous books on Mabel Dodge Luhan, the doyenne of the Taos art colony in the early 20th century. Rudnick died on June 6, 2021, at age 76.
