Biographical Information
Augustine Bernard Stoll was born in New York in 1887. She received her diploma as a trained nurse from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in 1916. Soon after, she entered Columbia University to receive training in public health nursing. She joined the Presbyterian surgical unit in France during WWI and when the war ended, she was sent to the former Czechoslovakia to help train nursing staffs. Stoll returned to the United States and was assigned to State public health work in Mississippi. However, she could not accept segregation rules, and in 1923 left that position. Soon after, she was sent to New Mexico to help expand the health program to the Northern Pueblo Indians. She also worked with the Jicarilla Apache in New Mexico. After 25 years of public health work, Stoll resigned and settled on a small fruit ranch that she bought near Santa Fe, NM. In 1968, she relocated to La Jolla, CA. She passed away in 1985 at age 97.
