Scope and Contents

This memory book contains 24 pages of inscriptions, sometimes to “Josie” and sometimes to “Mercedes”, dating from 1889-1896. Several inscriptions are from her siblings Charles Adolphus Scheurich (then living in Antonito, CO), Dora Celestina Scheurich, and another sister who signed in a code. There are inscriptions from Taos merchant and Josephine’s godfather, Albert G. Muller; a sketch of flowers signed by W. F. Meyer (the son of the immigrant merchant Ferdinand Meyer who operated stores between Costilla and Taos), as well as inscriptions from Taos friends, and possibly from her future husband, Taos pharmacist Frank C. Ellis.

Biographical Information

Governor Bent’s daughter, Maria Teresina Bent escaped their house during the Taos Rebellion in 1847 and soon after came to live with her uncle Kit Carson and his wife Josefa. Maria Teresa Bent married Carson’s close friend, Aloys Scheurich in 1864. They settled in Taos, NM. Their daughter, Josephine Mercedes Scheurich was born in 1879. She married Taos pharmacist, Frank C. Ellis by 1907, and lived in Taos until her death in 1926.
