Historical Note

In the summer of 1987 the University Staff Association (USA) was formed as a representative voice for UNM staff members on campus. In cooperation with David McKinney, Vice President of Business and Finance, and President Gerald May, USA worked to achieve recognition in the university community. In March 1988, President May created the Staff Council Study Group which was composed of staff members from all areas of UNM. The main objectives of the Study Group were to determine if there was a need for staff representation and if so how that representation should be organized. To obtain feedback from UNM staff, public hearings were held in November 1988. Using suggestions from the hearings, the Staff Council Study Group submitted their recommendation for an official Staff Council to Vice President McKinney who reviewed the proposal and submitted it to the UNM Board of Regents. In December 1989 the Regents officially approved the creation of the UNM Staff Council.
