Collection
Identifier: MSS-719-BC
Scope and Content
The collection contains a sampling of business receipts from 1951-1958 for the Sahd's General Store and ranch operation, as well as personal receipts for items such as vehicle repairs, the Sahds' son's tuition to New Mexico Military Institute, and charities. The receipts reveal information on agriculture, clothing, advertising, furniture, medicine, firearms, diet, arts and crafts, and transportation for the northern New Mexico community of Pe?asco. Receipts are signed by store owners S. Peter Sahd, Patricia Sahd, and other family members, as well as employees. The business receipts include notes/letters from suppliers about overpayment or other problems concerning their orders. Some product invoices have shipping invoices attached. There are also receipts for licences and fees needed to operate the store.
The receipts show that the Sahd's did business with companies in St. Louis, Denver, Oklahoma City, Cleveland, El Paso and other out-of-state businesses. They also dealt with local businesses in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos like the Charles Ilfeld Company, Superior Baking Company, and Zork Hardware Company. The "Livestock folders contain receipts for the Sahd's ranch on the Santa Barbara River. The folders labeled "Individuals" have receipts for labor as well as goods such as local produce.
Receipts are arranged by year and then in alphabetical order. The few receipts from 1951 were grouped by Sahd with 1952 receipts and they have been retained in that order. Business receipts are first, followed by personal receipts which are also arranged alphabetically by year.
A small oversize section contains large receipts and sales flyers.

Background Information
S. P. "Pete" Sahd, Taos County business man and rancher, was born in Lebanon on January 1, 1911. He moved with his family to New Mexico in 1920 where he attended schools in Albuquerque, Cerrillos, and Santa Fe. After receiving a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of New Mexico in 1937, he taught school at Stanley, New Mexico. While there, he met his wife, Patricia Lugibihl. Taking a break from teaching, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945, then returned to teach in Pojoaque after his discharge. In March 1946 Pete and Pat Sahd opened their general store in Peñasco.
The Sahd family have done business in Taos County since 1929 beginning with Peter Abho Sahd, Pete's dad, who opened a grocery store on the Taos Plaza. Pete's uncles were both in the mercantile business; Albert managed Sahd's Grocery and Market in Taos while George owned Rancho's Trading Post in Ranchos de Taos. Sahd's General Store was operated by Pete and Pat, their two sons, Randolph and Theodore, and local employees. Printed on their business letterhead was "S.P. Sahd Land & Cattle Co. Rancho de Santa Barbara and Shad's General Store, Retails Everything." The Pe?asco store is still in operation today.
In addition to his business enterprise, Pete Sahd was active in civic and veteran affairs throughout the state. He was a member of the Taos County Chamber of Commerce, the Republican State Central Committee, and involved in Boy Scouts and the American Legion. In April 1969, he was appointed as a member of the Veteran Service Commission by Governor David Cargo. Pete and Pat also published a local newspaper, Los Peasqueros, begining in February 1959. It contained ads for their store, as well as short articles about the community.

Processing Information
This collection contains only a sampling of the receipts generated by Sahd's General Store. The following criteria were used for selecting which business receipts to retain in the collection: 1. Receipts annotated with notes often indicating whether the items were for the house, ranch, school or particular customers. For example, a Santa Fe Builders Supply Co. receipt for building materials and electrical supplies for the school. 2. Examples of different designs of various companies' receipts. Some companies changed their receipt's design in the middle of the year and others changed names marking through the old name and adding the new. 3. Receipts for unusual items as well as commonly used items. 4. When possible, receipts that are in good condition and complete. 5. Emphasis on receipts for companies not well represented in other CSWR collections. 6. Receipts that give evidence of the business operation such as names of employees, customers, and delivery people, or the different places where products were delivered.
