Collection
Identifier: UNMA 151
Scope and Content Note
Popejoy Hall Collection documents their activities between 1966 and 1997. The collection is organized into four series. These series are grouped around larger themes (i.e. events hosted, annual reports, general publicity), but occasionally overlap in content. The first series contains information about events hosted in the Popejoy Hall from 1966 to 1997. It includes flyers, pictures, and media coverage of these events and is arranged chronologically. The second series is about the organization itself, including annuals reports, building information, and general publicity. The third and fourth series consist of color slides and posters documenting the events hosted in the theatre.

Institutional History
Thomas Lafayette Popejoy was appointed President of the University on New Mexico in 1948. In 1964, with help from community leaders, he convinced the University’s Board of Regents to build a concert hall on the campus. More than just a concert hall, Popejoy made certain the new venue would be equipped to handle almost any kind of performance.
The University Concert Hall opened October 1st, 1966, with a concert by the Utah Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maurice Abravanel. Soon thereafter, the hall hosted touring musicals, lectures, dance performances and live theater.
Seating up to 1985 patrons, Popejoy Hall is the largest such venue in the state. Following a major renovation in 1996 and seating replacement in summer 2007, Popejoy hosts touring Broadway shows, symphony concerts, musical soloists and artists of international caliber, world-renowned ballet and modern dance companies, and noted speakers from a broad spectrum of disciplines.
