Biography

Sergio Sánchez Santamaría, is a print maker, muralist and illustrator born in Tlayacapán, Morelos in 1976. He studied at the “La Esmeralda”, Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura, y Grabado, in Mexico City. Among his teachers were Alberto Beltrán, Francisco Moreno Capdevila and Adolfo Mexiac. A master of wood and lino cuts, mezzotint and lithography, he works in the tradition of José Guadalupe Posada and Leopoldo Méndez, but with a modern sensibility and contemporary take on the customs, politics, and people of Mexico.

Santamaría has won awards in Mexico, Belgium and Sweden for his work. His solo exhibitions include galleries and museums in Mexico, the United States, Japan, Poland and Russia and he has traveled to many of these countries as an artist in residence. He has completed a number of murals in Mexico and the United States.
