Scope and Content

The Mexican Political Caricatures Collection is comprised of 256 original drawings, proofs, and works in progress by Mexican cartoonists from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, as well as proofs and photocopies from the Mexican political magazine Quehacer Político.

Biographies

Artists represented in the Mexican Political Caricatures Collection include:

Juan Carlos Carrillo Escudero, known as Matvei, was born in 1971 in Mexico City. He studied graphic and advertising design at the Escuela Técnica del Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas. His career began in 1991 when he contributed to the publication Ser. He has since provided caricatures for the following publications: Cómo, Rotativo, Quehacer Político, Mira, Espectativas, La Prensa, La Jornada Semanal, Reforma, El Nacional, and Express de México.

Arturo Kemchs Dávila, known as Kemchs, was born in Mexico City in 1958. He is widely published and internationally known. He has published his cartoons in numerous magazines and newspapers in Mexico, North and South America, and Europe. He has won numerous prizes and was president of the Sociedad Mexicana de Caricaturistas (SMC) and the Unión Iberoamericana de Humoristas Gráficos. He is also the author of 17 books. As of 2013, he holds the position of director of the magazine Chocarreros, Los Amantes de las Musas, which he created in 1996.

Emmanuel Vélez Jaime, born in Mexico City in 1949, contributed to Diorama político, Interviú, Ser, Rhumor, El Rotativo, Unomásuno and other publications. His son, Víctor Emmanuel Vélez Becerra, born In Mexico City, started his career in 1990 in Notitas al Pastor. He has contributed to El Universal, El Economista, and Siempre! In 1995, the SMC gave him the “Mejor Desempeño de Caricaturista Joven” prize.

Other cartoonists are represented: Jotabé; Jacobo, who contributed to El Valle and Lapiztola; and Efraín Dorantes Suárez, known as Efraín, who won first prize at the Concurso Nacional de Caricatura in 2008.

The Mexican political magazine Quehacer Político was founded by Miguel Contón Zetina.

Abstract

The Mexican Political Caricatures Collection is comprised of original drawings, proofs, and works in progress by Mexican cartoonists from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, as well as proofs and photocopies from the Mexican political magazine, Quehacer Político.

Arrangement of the Collection

The collection is organized primarily according to artist. Those works that are not identified by artist are organized according to whether they appeared in the Quehacer Político or not. If not, they are separated into signed and unsigned works.
