Scope and Content
Series 1: American posters, 1951-1969. This series contains publicity posters from 277 motion pictures, 1951-1969. The posters provide examples of advertising by the American motion picture industry in the mid- twentieth century. The collection is divided into four subseries: I. Dramas, II. Comedies, III. Family entertainment, IV. Other genres. Other genres include mysteries, adult films, and foreign films. Some of the posters have accompanying publicity including photographs, smaller advertisements, and film reviews. There is also a display manual for one of the films.
Series 2: Latin American posters, 1930-2013. The Latin American collection includes 48 posters from regions throughout the Americas, with 2 posters from Italy. The film posters from Mexico range in date from the 1930s to 2013 and were created by artists such as Abraham Gonzalez, Leopoldo Mendoza Andrade, Josep Renau, Carlos Palleiro, Rafael Lopez Castro, and Juan Antonio Vargas. Chilean posters were created by Colectivo Artistico La Patogallina. The films cover a wide range of topics, from comedy, romance, and drama to politics, and feature characters such as Tarzan, Zorro, and Cantinflas.
Film and production companies involved in the distribution of the posters include: Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Film Company, Azteca Films, S.A., España Sono Films de Mexico, Paramount Pictures, Peliculas Agrasánchez, S.A., Columbia Pictures, Cine Visíon, Cinematografía Azteca, Dyana, S.A., Posa Films, Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Conacine, Dasa Films, Francia Films, WaltDisney Productions and 20th Century Fox.
Series 3: Uruguayan film pamphlets 1953-1954. The 25 Uruguayan pamphlets are from the Cine Club de Montevideo, and feature illustrations and sketches by the following artists: José Gurvich, Lily Salvo, José Collel, C. A. Llanos, Augusto Torres, Antonio Pezzino and Horacio Torres. In some cases filmography timelines for main actors, actresses and directors, are included.
