Scope and Content
Albumen carte de visite photographs depicting Maximilian, Carlota, their court, and military personnel during the European intervention in Mexico, 1863-1867. Photos include portraits of the rulers, army officers and soldiers, and portraits of court members. Photos related to the execution of Maxmilian include photos of his body, the site of execution, and montages of the event. Other photomontages show the imperial couple and leading persons of their court and of the republican leaders who followed their reign. There are also portraints of "tipos populares," (street vendors), including some of women smoking and women and children making tortillas with a banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the background. Others show the Kickapoo Indian delegation to Maximilian's court. There are a small number of images of Chapultepec Castle (including an interior) and other important buildings, such as the Naitonal Palace. Two images are duplicates. The names of photographers, Francois Aubert and Mérille appear on the photo mounts.
Most of the prints are 3-1/4 x 2-1/4 inch cartes-de-visite; one imperial size print, 8 x 10 inches, is boxed in a separate portfolio.
